Before spending time on downloads, check whether your hardware supports Catalina.

If you are on a Windows PC or an unsupported Mac, you can download the .pkg file directly from Apple's content delivery network (CDN).
There is a significant difference between the 2.86 GB "combo update" (usually found on Apple's support pages) and the full installer.
The download progress will appear in the Terminal window. The full installer is about 7–8 GB, so it may take some time depending on your internet speed.
Open and change your Mac’s system clock back to a date closer to Catalina's lifecycle (e.g., October 2020) by typing: date 102500002020
